Your shelves should be a reflection of your style and personality. Here are a few tips to getting those perfectly not perfect, balanced displays of you and your tastes
Stick to limited color palette - this helps to create a cohesive look.
Shop your home - look for a variety of sizes, heights, shapes and textures
Start with larger items first - a vase, clock, basket, lamps and large picture frames then add in medium sized pieces around them and finish with the smaller trinkets
Focus on symmetry and balance- spread out like items, vary the heights using stacked books or magazines, mix the textures, for instance a basket next to a clear vase, work in greenery for splash of light and color
Create vignettes with clusters and layers - a large framed print with a tall candle stick and a potted succulent in front of it, odd numbers tend to be most pleasing to the eye, interspersed with single items placed on their own.
Less is more - don't over clutter
Stand back and edit- change things around until you get it right.
